Department of Energy (DOE)  Reorganization Shifts Priorities Toward Fossi Fuels and Nuclear Power.

Last week, the Department of Energy announced a “Big Reorganization” reflecting a shift in priorities toward fossil fuels, nuclear power, and critical minerals, and away from some renewable energy initiatives. Key changes include the removal of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) from the public chart (though its functions may be renamed and reabsorbed) and the winding down of the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) and Grid Deployment Office (GDO). The new structure is organized under three main offices: the Under Secretary for Energy, the Under Secretary for Science, and the Under Secretary for National Security and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).  Of particular interest to the natural gas industry will be the potential impact the reorganization will have on the activities and responsibilities of the EERE office that overs appliance minimum energy efficiency regulations, energy efficiency building codes, etc. It’s not clear at this time where that function will be assigned.  AGA will be monitoring the impact of the reorganization and assessing how the department will be addressing efficiency issues of major concern for the natural gas industry. We will be providing more details as they become available.
