International Code Council (ICC) Conference, Expo and Code Hearings to be Held Next Week in Cleveland, Ohio from October 19 to October 30 – Fuel Gas Detectors on the Agenda.
The ICC Annual Conference will be held next week with the Expo to be held from October 19 & 20 and the Committee Action Hearings for the Group B Code from October 22 to 30. The detailed agenda for the 2025 Group B Committee Action Hearing #2 (CAH#2) will start on Wednesday at 10 AM Eastern Time (October 22, 2025). The Group B series of codes include administrative provisions for all of the I Codes except the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and the International Residential Code (IRC), the International Building Code (IBC), the International Existing Building Code (IEBC), International Property Maintenance and Zoning Code (IPM/ZC) and the IgCC. The 2025 Report of the Committee Action hearing on the 2025 Editions of the B Group can be found here . AGA will be sponsoring the opening reception of the conference and BECS staff will be participating in the Conference and Code Hearings. We have reviewed all the public comments on each of the I-Codes and the Report of the Committee Actions hearings votes on all proposals to address any that may impact the direct use of natural gas for the built environment. We have identified proposal (RB29-25) to the International Residential Code (IRC) for coverage for the installation of fuel gas detectors as a non-mandatory Appendix provision in the IRC. This non-mandatory revision is in response for a proposal that was originally submitted to the IRC that mandated the installation of fuel gas detectors as a compliance requirement to the IRC. At the April Public Hearings, the IRC code committee disapproved the mandated provision by a 9-0 vote. The committee disapproved the proposal “due to several issues that need to be addressed. These include defining a flow path, clarifying the use of detectors and alarms, and where required by jurisdiction, and removing the ownership clause. The committee recommends that the proposal begin with an appendix rather than being included in the main body of the code. Additionally, the committee encourages the proponent to modify the proposal to incorporate the floor modifications presented during the testimony.” The rationale for submitting the non-mandatory appendix is listed that it offer “guidance to any jurisdiction considering how to implement the installation of fuel gas alarms. It may also help guide individual jurisdiction considering the local installation of fuel gas alarms with a basis for those requirements that are consistent with best industry practices and the NFPA 715 Standard. “ We will report back on the ICC action on the revised proposal for fuel gas detectors and any other actions on proposals coming out of the Code Hearings impacting the direct use of natural gas.
