BECS Committee Initiates Development of Proposed Changes to the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) – Submittal of Proposed Changes Due to the ICC on December 9, 2024.
In last weeks, Update on End Use Codes and Standards, we reported that the International Code Council (ICC) staff announced that “The 2024 IECC, Chapter 11 of the International Residential Code and the Energy Appendices of the International Residential Code with the updated scope and intent will open for public comment on October 7, 2024, and run through December 9, 2024. This is the link of the announcement in the Building Safety Journal.” We also reported that the BECS Committee established a Task Group to develop and prepare draft proposals to the 2027 IECC and will be meeting over the coming weeks to outline the proposals. All BECS Committee members interested in participating on this Task Group are invited to participate in this newly formed Task Groups meetings and should contact BECS staff on your desire to participate and can also submit recommendations on suggested needed changes to us. Some of the immediate concerns with the 2024 IECC are the continued inclusion of non-mandatory appendix that can be adopted by states and jurisdictions during their energy code adoption process, provisions that impose higher requirements for natural gas applications then similar electric applications, provisions designed to address reductions of metrics. i.e., green house gas reductions, that are outside the scope of the IECC. We will report out recommended proposed changes from the BECS Committee Task Group and encourage committee members to provide feedback on the recommendations as well as present recommendations on any provisions in the 2024 IECC that are of a concern to the BECS staff for consideration by the Task Group for action as deemed necessary. You can access the 2024 IECC read only version here.
